As the redevelopment of the former Vidal Court housing project rolls on, the latest section — Greenfield — celebrated its official dedication Wednesday.
Once a working-class neighborhood, the West Side area around Vidal began to see increased crime and blight in more recent times.
Charter Oak Communities — which is the city’s public housing authority — and Stamford Hospital have undertaken tandem redevelopment projects in the area, the hospital building a new 12-story medical center and the authority demolishing Vidal Court and replacing it with a mix of market-rate and affordable housing.
Crime rates have since gone down as Charter Oak and the city entertain designs for broader redevelopment in the “Stillwater corridor.”
